Transforming The Rehabilitation Experience

May 21, 2019 | Project Spotlight

Designing an environment where you can improve your health and wellness is key to a successful senior rehabilitation experience. The design and atmosphere of centers are now focused on creating an inviting patient experience that is motivating, welcoming, safe, and accessible.

As the competition grows between rehabilitation service centers, the expanded generations of patients require facilities to focus on the patient experience by creating a less institutional atmosphere and promoting relaxation. This was the objective of Woodbine Rehabilitation & Healthcare when renovating the rehabilitation center, rooms, and common areas as part of a $4,000,000 renovation completed in 2018. Challenged with budget and not having the luxury for new construction, the renovation had to be phased to allow the facility to remain occupied.

The key feature of the facility is a new 6400 square foot gym offering the latest in specialized equipment for physical, occupational and speech therapies. To help residents attain their highest level of functioning, their state of the art equipment includes a therapy car and devices to measure and treat muscular stimulation, balance, swallowing, and stroke or spinal cord re-education.

The enhanced technologies allows for a full range of services that support rehabilitation, especially in re-creating home environments or replicating the physical movements patients will find necessary after discharge. Kitchen, laundry, and full bath are part of Woodbine’s gym area to teach patients how to resume activities of daily home living and allow them to safely practice what they learn. A porch “texture garden” is also provided to help patients overcome the challenge of walking on different types of surfaces.

The transformed Woodbine Rehabilitation & Healthcare facility entrance through the Central Rotunda reveals an inspirational atmosphere that connects to a wealth of amenities for family, friends, visitors and staff. To allow for more natural light and ease of movement, the staircase was removed and the finishes upgraded in a classic and clean style that is carried throughout the facility.

Using design to create an environment that makes patients and families feel inspired by their rehabilitation choice was the key objective of the Woodbine and KSA Interiors team. KSA Interiors provided the space planning, interior design, and FF&E selection services to create this inspiring environment for Woodbine’s people-rich culture.
