Designer Spotlight: Mary Katherine Crouch
It has been over four years since we sang “Rio” by Duran Duran in a Lakeside Karaoke bar to say our goodbyes and to wish Mary Katherine the best as she headed south. Distance did not keep us from staying in touch and hearing about her endeavors. A lot has changed for her since then from completing a Master of Fine Arts degree from Florida State University to being an assistant professor of Interior Design at the University of Central Oklahoma. We are so excited to have her back and look forward to all of her expertise, thought leadership and engaging fun approach to problem solving.
Pantone Color: 7425 C, I usually choose my pedicure nail polish close to this shade.
Phone App: Don’t laugh but I just learned how to send gifs in my texts. It’s not technically an app but it is my new fav.
Music: Tegan and Sara
Ice Cream: Celesti Gelati “Just Ask” flavor
Drink: Diet Coke is my morning caffeine but I’ll never refuse a Cosmo.
Meal: Anything mexican
Season: Fall – Bust out the cords and the layers!
Let’s get personal
Deepest Fear: Being in a Port-a-Potty that gets pushed over and having all the gook spill all over me. I decided that is the point when I would lose my mind. Haha…
Favorite way to waste a Saturday: Lunch with a friend followed by wandering around a fun antique or thrift store.
Superpower you wish you had: Super strength so I could carry all the stuff that designers cart around in one trip.
When I was little I wanted to be….?: An astronaut…I wanted to be up with the stars.
If you could learn a new craft, what would it be?
Glass Blowing: I would love to be able to make those beautiful artisan vases. I took a marble making class once and let’s just say it was super challenging for the mind and body. I don’t think anyone would call my marbles fine works of art.
Who is a designer that inspires you?
Dorothy Cosonas: Creative Director and textile designer for Knoll Textiles. She creates classic patterns with timeless colors that still have a sense of whimsy. I pursue those goals for my own design work.
Most memorable design school moment?
Sophomore Studio Self Propelled Boat Project: This project tested my newly forming problem solving skills to the limits. There were late nights, hair pulling, and several crying episodes. In the end, my boat made it across the university pool using balloon air “fuel” carrying the important cargo of one stick of butter. It will be our little secret that it was supposed to carry four sticks.
If you could design anything, what would it be?
Textiles: mohair plaid anyone?
